Anti-Vaccine Groups Continue to Cause National Problems

The United States seems to be on track to have more measles cases than any year in more than a decade, with virtually all cases linked to other countries, including Europe where there's a big outbreak. Already there have been 89 cases reported so far. The U.S. normally sees only about 50 cases of measles in a year thanks to vaccinations. Health officials are reluctant to make predictions, but acknowledge the pace of reports is unusually hot. "It's hard to say, but we're certainly getting a lot," said Dr. Greg Wallace, who leads the measles, mumps, rubella and polio team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Europe, especially France, has been hit hard by measles, with more than 6,500 cases reported in 33 nations. International health officials are blaming it on the failure to vaccinate all children. Just about all U.S. outbreaks were sparked by people bringing it here from other countries. This week, international health officials posted an alert urging travelers everywhere to get the recommended two doses of vaccine before flying overseas. "The risk of getting infection is very high," said Dr. Cuauhtemoc Ruiz Matus, an immunization expert with the Pan American Health Organization. These diseases are a real threat to public health, and while we’re spending billions on national security, almost all that money goes towards “security theater,” such as full-body scanning equipment at airports, which does almost nothing to protect the public. We’d be much better off spending those scarce funds on detecting infections at the border. In the most recent invasion, the measles virus has snuck in thanks to a single unvaccinated student from Utah, who picked up the disease in Poland. The junior high student traveled to Poland with his family to pick up his sister, who was there as a Mormon missionary. As reported by the Associated Press, up to 1000 people have already been exposed, and the circle could easily spread beyond that. Measles is a dangerous and incredibly infectious virus, transmitting easily between people. According to the CDC: “About one out of 10 children with measles also gets an ear infection, and up to one out of 20 gets pneumonia. For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die.” This is not a disease to take lightly. Fortunately, the vaccine is highly effective, which means the real challenge is getting people to take it. The seemingly unstoppable rise of throat and mouth cancers over the past two decades has left experts baffled and deeply concerned. These are truly horrible diseases. More than 15,000 new patients are diagnosed each year in Britain alone and almost 8,000 die from the most common type, cancer of the oesophagus. Two-thirds of sufferers are men. And those that survive are often left horrifically disfigured by aggressive radiotherapy and surgery. Most worryingly, numbers of new cases have doubled since 1989. We used to think most oral and throat cancers  -  which also include laryngeal (voice box), tracheal (windpipe) and oropharyngeal (soft-palate) tumours  -  were due to a lifetime of smoking and heavy alcohol consumption, and only really occurred in old age. But as health messages hit home, numbers of smokers and drinkers dropped, fewer older men and women developed these cancers and a new group of patients  -  middle-class, middle-aged men who drank moderately and had never smoked  -  emerged. Revealed: oral sex is ‘bigger cause of throat cancer than tobacco’

They say the human papilloma virus spread during unprotected sex is to blame for a disturbing rise in potentially deadly oral cancers in the last few decades. Doctors have called for boys to be vaccinated against HPV just like teenage girls to stop the spread of the disease. HPV is best known as the cause of around 70 per cent of cervical cancers. Since 2008, girls have been vaccinated against the virus aged 12 and 13 in schools. However, it can also cause warts, verrucas and other cancers. Cancers of the mouth and oropharynx - the top of the throat - used to be mainly diagnosed in older men who drink or smoke. But increasingly, it is being seen in younger men. Fraudulent autism vaccine study shows the flaws in medical journal system

The study, by discredited British doctor Andrew Wakefield, was originally published in 1998 by the journal The Lancet, and was retracted last year. Now the BMJ has published an investigation by British journalist Brian Deer finding that the whole thing was a fraud. According to a BMJ editorial, “not one of the 12 cases reported in the 1998 Lancet paper was free of misrepresentation or undisclosed alteration…and that in no single case could the medical records be fully reconciled” with Lancet publication. The editorial concludes that there is “no doubt” that Wakefield was responsible. The study, with just 12 patients, was dubious from the beginning. Why did it take 12 astonishingly long years to find out the truth? Strict British libel laws may have had something to do with it. But the bigger problem is the limitations of the medical journal system. The Food and Drug Administration often examines much of the raw data when it analyzes whether to approve or restrict a drug. But medical journals rely more on the good faith of researchers and something called peer review, outside researchers who anonymously review papers. Plain shelves, a desk, and a computer surround a breast-high bench arrayed with instrumentation. The paint scheme: early dorm room. “The posters are to cover the holes in the walls,” jokes William Bonnez, an associate professor of medicine and a veteran researcher who says not much has changed inside the room in a quarter century. But this is no ordinary workspace, and some day it may merit a plaque. Here, starting more than two decades ago, Bonnez and University colleagues Richard Reichman, a professor of medicine, and Robert Rose ’94M (PhD), an associate professor of medicine, developed the key technology behind two vaccines that may eliminate cervical cancer, a disease that each year kills 250,000 women internationally, including 4,500 Americans. One vaccine using the Rochester technology is Gardasil, developed by pharmaceutical giant Merck, that’s expected to be on the market some time this year. Most oral cancers are caused by smoking or drinking but Darren's cancer was caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which is sexually transmitted. Darren had caught it through having oral sex. And he's not alone. New research shows that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of HPV-related oral cancers amongst young people. Actress Jaime Winstone sets out to discover why the statistics are rising and whether anything can be done to stop this trend. Having met Darren, Jaime wants to know more. She's sadly got an intimate relationship with cancer as filming began for this programme, her close friend Paul, a DJ, died from pancreatic cancer aged only 26. Whilst his cancer wasn't preventable, Darren's was. FDA panel backs new use for Gardasil vaccine

The panel of Food and Drug Administration advisers said a 4,000-patient study conducted by Merck & Co. Inc. shows the vaccine lowers the risk of anal cancer in men. They said these results can also be applied to women. Anal cancer is relatively rare, affecting about 5,000 people in the U.S. each year. Gardasil, Merck's top-selling vaccine, already is approved for prevention of cervical cancer and genital warts in girls and women aged 9 to 26. It's also approved for preventing genital warts in boys and men aged 9 to 26. The vaccine works by blocking four of the most common strains of human papilloma virus, or HPV.

HPV vaccine: why are so few women getting vaccinated?

We now better understand the link between cancers and viruses and how some viruses such as the human papillomavirus (HPV) can change cells and cause them to become cancerous. In essence we have identified a communicable form of cancer. HPV is often a sexually transmitted disease, which according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is very common and it infects about 6 million people a year. It's estimated that 50 percent of sexually active men and women have been exposed at some point in their lives. There are hundreds of strains of HPV; about 30 to 40 of the strains are sexually transmitted. In the majority of the infections our body's immune system takes care of it without any treatment. However some of these sexually transmitted infections can cause cervical cancer. It's the high-risk strains the virus that remain in the body and cause a long-term infections. It then invades the cells of the cervix causing changes in the cellular structure and DNA to become pre-cancerous lesions as well as cause genital warts. If these infections aren't detected and treated they can go on to eventually become an invasive cervical cancer.
