The doctor said it was a symptom of advanced oral cancer, but Hill had never smoked a cigarette or chewed a plug of tobacco, considered the main causes of the disease when he was diagnosed in 1997. So why was it there? Not until four years later did Hill get an explanation for his brush with death: a microbe called human papilloma virus-16 had apparently moved into his tonsils, gradually turning normal cells into cancer. Hill, now 59, had become part of a wave of relatively young nonsmokers who contracted oral cancer from the sexually transmitted virus, fueling an overall increase in new cases. Viruses such as human papilloma may be the most overlooked bad guys in the war on cancer, silent invaders that contribute to more than a dozen malignancies and may cause 15 percent of the cancer cases worldwide each year. Cancer Treatment Using Light Sensitive Drugs Proven Effective

11/12/2007 Denver, CO Regina Sass AssociatedContent (www.associatedcontent.com) Researchers at Imperial College, London, United Kingdom, have shown that by using a combination of light activated cancer drugs with antibodies targeted to find cancerous tumors, the antibodies might be able to be a much more effective treatment for many different types of cancers. In the study, the researchers show how they have been able to attach 10 light activated molecules of a potent cancer drug to an antibody that is known to seek out the cancerous cells. They have been able to prove that this method makes it possible to deliver the powerful drug molecules to the cancer targets more efficiently than when they are not attached to an antibody. The process is called photodynamic therapy (PDT). It focuses on getting the drugs to the cancerous tissues and then lighting the area with a cold laser. The cold laser starts off a chain reaction by converting oxygen to a very toxic type of oxygen-like bleach. The bleach then destroys any cells in its vicinity. If it has been targeted right to the tumor, then the tumor is destroyed, if it misses the tumor, like in other methods of delivery, healthy tissue can be destroyed. This has been shown to be a successful method for treating cancers of the head and neck, prostate and skin. But there is a limitation to the current PDT. Patients to get cancer diagnosis within hours

11/11/2007 Bolton, England Jane Lavender Bolton News (www.theboltonnews.co.uk) Cancer patients are to be given "on the spot" test results following the introduction of a speedier diagnosis system at the Royal Bolton Hospital. People with suspected head and neck cancer can be in and out of hospital in less than four hours. In that time they will have been tested and diagnosed - a vast improvement on previous times which saw many patients wait weeks for results. People who find a lump see their GP and may be referred to hospital for further checks. If they arrive at 9am on the day of their hospital appointment, they could be told by a consultant whether or not they have cancer by 11.30am the same day. It is the first scheme of its kind at the hospital. Karenza Graves, head and neck specialist nurse at the Royal Bolton Hospital, said: "This certainly speeds things up. There is a good prognosis with head and neck cancer if there is an early diagnosis." "Finding a lump is an extremely worrying time for a patient, so making this process faster eases their concern, especially if the tests show there is nothing to worry about." Around three patients are referred to the head and neck cancer clinic every week with an average of 75 people diagnosed with the disease every year. CDC informs that in U.S. Smoking rate levels off

Among serious reasons of this process Jia-Rui Chong from Los Angeles Times named reduced spendings on anti-tobacco campaigns and bigger marketing budgets from cigarette companies. As the director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health Dr. Matt McKenna said, "What is happening doesn't have to happen. With appropriate support and efforts and counter-marketing, tens of thousands of people don't have to die." In McKenna's estimates a 0.1% decline in 2006 doesn't play a significant role in the solution of this vital problem, which takes lives of 480000 people each year and results in tobacco-related diseases. HPV common in young men

Certain strains of HPV, which can be transmitted from male to female partners, are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. In The Journal of Infectious Diseases, Dr Laura A. Koutsky and colleagues at the University of Washington note that, although much is known about HPV infection in women, this is not the case in men. To investigate further, the researchers collected samples of genital cells at four-month intervals from 240 heterosexually active male university students between 18 and 20 years old. Higher rates in males After 24 months, the incidence of new genital HPV infections was 62.4 percent. This is considerably greater than the 38- to 43 percent rate seen in comparable studies of young women, the investigators note. Acquisition rates did not differ by site of initial detection. Overall, 33 different HPV types were recorded, but the most commonly detected types were HPV-16 and HPV-84. HPV-16 is a subtype known to be associated with cervical cancer - previous studies have found that about 50 percent of cervical cancers are caused by this virus. Epoetin Alfa Has No Effect on Survival or Relapse in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

The details of this study were published in the November 15, 2007 issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology * Biology * Physics.1 Epoetin alfa (Procrit®, Epogen®) and darbepoetin alfa (Aranesp®) have been evaluated in anemic patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiation therapy or chemoradiotherapy. The administration of erythropoietins improves hemoglobin levels and decreases transfusion requirements without having an impact on survival. However, there has been concern that erythropoietins could stimulate tumor growth and result in a higher relapse rate. In one study from Denmark in patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiotherapy, the goal was to maintain high hemoglobin levels. In this study, patients receiving prophylactic epoetin alfa to maintain high hemoglobin levels had a lower disease-free survival than patients receiving placebo. In the current study, 141 patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiation therapy were randomly allocated to receive epoetin alfa or no epoetin alfa. Hemoglobin levels were 9.0-13.5 g/dL at baseline. Hemoglobin levels rose by 1.66 g/dL in the treatment group and decreased by 0.24 g/dL in the control group. Study Finds No Connection between Vitamin D and Overall Cancer Deaths

However, higher vitamin D levels were associated with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer death. Several epidemiological studies have supported the hypothesis that that vitamin D can reduce cancer mortality by decreasing cancer incidence or improving survival. Animal and cell studies suggest that vitamin D may reduce tumor growth and induce cancer cell death. Diet and exposure to sunlight are the major sources of vitamin D. D. Michal Freedman, Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., and colleagues analyzed data from the third national Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine the relationship between levels of circulating vitamin D in the blood and cancer mortality in a group of 16,818 participants aged 17 and older. After about a decade of follow-up, 536 participants had died of cancer. Cancer mortality was not related to the level of circulating vitamin D for the overall group, nor was it related when the researchers looked at the data by sex, race, or age.
