Black raspberries reduce DNA damage in oral cancer survivors

Source: www.prweb.com Author: press release New research presented Wednesday, April 10, at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2013 in Washington, DC, suggests that a food-based cancer prevention study aimed at oral cancer survivors was effective at attenuating highly reactive oxygen molecules that can damage DNA and trigger cancer. In the study, a phase 1b clinical trial conducted at The Ohio State University, participants consumed 4 - 8 grams of black raspberries daily for six months. The berries were well tolerated by the participants and adherence to the regimen was good. This study provides compelling data that indicate biochemical markers of cancer-causing DNA damage were reduced in participants who adhered to the food-based regimen and supports other evidence from a phase 2 human trial linking application of black raspberry gel to precancerous lesions to a reduced risk of developing oral cancer. Black raspberries, not to be confused with blackberries, are almost exclusively grown in Oregon, on the west coast of the United States. They have been studied extensively because of their high concentration of certain phytonutrients and antioxidants. BerriProducts, an Oregon-based company, has been supplying black raspberry products to research universities across the country for the last four years.

But as the expanding obesity epidemic has shown, there are major obstacles to getting broad swaths of people to adopt such a healthful lifestyle. So, for many years, cancer researchers have investigated whether specific nutrients—those that epidemiologic and animal model studies have suggested could sway cancer’s course—could decrease cancer risk. Much has been learned from this work, researchers in the field say, but, as is the case with treatment, each new discovery points to new areas of focus and other potential avenues of progress. With promising bioactive compounds in the pipeline, many prevention researchers are focused on figuring out not just whether something like sulforaphane, a natural compound found in broccoli and broccoli sprouts, can kill cancer cells in a test tube or animal model—which it does, quite well—but how, at the molecular level, it accomplishes this task, whether there are some cancer cells that are more likely to respond to it, and whether there are ways of discerning early on that the intervention is having its intended effect. Chemopreventive agents in black raspberries identified

Researchers at the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center found that anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids in black raspberries, inhibited growth and stimulated apoptosis in the esophagus of rats treated with an esophageal carcinogen. "Our data provide strong evidence that anthocyanins are important for cancer prevention," said the study's lead author, Gary D. Stoner, Ph.D., a professor in the department of internal medicine at Ohio State University. Stoner and his team of researchers fed rats an anthocyanin-rich extract of black raspberries and found that the extract was nearly as effective in preventing esophageal cancer in rats as whole black raspberries containing the same concentration of anthocyanins. This study demonstrates the importance of anthocyanins as preventive agents in black raspberries and validated similar in vitro findings. It is among the first to look at the correlation between anthocyanins and cancer prevention in vivo. Stoner and his colleagues have conducted clinical trials using whole berry powder, which has yielded some promising results, but required patients to take up to 60 grams of powder a day. New findings show cancer prevention effects of black raspberries, blueberries, olive leaves and green tea

In the first study, researchers from Ohio State University discovered that a gel based on freeze-dried black raspberries helps prevent precancerous mouth tumors (lesions) from becoming malignant. "This gel appears to be a valid means of delivering anthocyanins and other cancer-preventing compounds directly to precancerous cells, since it slowed or reduced lesion progression in about two-thirds of study participants," said researcher Susan Mallery. According to the American Cancer Society, oral squamous cell carcinoma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, causing 7,500 deaths each year in the United States.
