Oral carcinogenesis is a process that usually passes through oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). Oral lichen planus (OLP) consists of immune-related chronic disorders that have been included in the OPMDs due to their possible transformation into oral cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the early presence of ALDH1&2 in OLP compared to early oral leukoplakias (OL), especially mildly and non-dysplastic OL. Materials and methods: The study type is experimental, and the study design is characterized as semiquantitative research which belongs to the branch of experimental research. The study sample consisted of paraffin-embedded OLP biopsy samples from the archives of the Department of Oral Medicine/Pathology, School of Dentistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, during the period 2009-2019. The study sample contained 24 cases of OLP (14 erosive and 10 reticular) and 30 cases of OL (16 cases of moderately and severely dysplastic OL and 14 cases of mildly and non-dysplastic OL). The CSC-related biomarker ALDH1&2 was examined using semiquantitative immunohistochemistry (monoclonal antibody sc-166362, Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Dallas, Texas, USA, 1:100). Sheffield team to develop patch that treats oral lichen planus

With £471,789 in funding, the three-year project will develop a patch that can stay in the mouth to treat oral lichen planus (OLP), a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease that presents itself as white, red and/or ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa, which is the moist tissue that lines parts the body including the mouth. Drugs including steroids are available to treat OLP, but there is currently no effective way to administer them. Steroids also come with side effects and the relatively high doses needed to treat OLP can exacerbate them. Now, Professor Ipsita Roy and Dr David Alexander Gregory will develop a solution that delivers the drug locally and in a spatially selective manner. Professor Roy explained that this would facilitate a much lower dosage of therapeutic. A significant challenge, however, is to develop an adhesive that works in the wet environment of the mouth where tissue is highly mobile. To this end, the Sheffield team has obtained proof of concept data for a new highly adhesive polymer system (polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)) that is produced by bacteria and is environmentally sustainable. New guidance for care of patients with oral potentially malignant disorders

Source: www.dental-tribune.com Author: Anisha Hall Hoppe, Dental Tribune International General dental practitioners (GDPs) now have clearer recommendations to which they can refer for successfully monitoring and managing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) in patients who have been discharged from specialised oral or maxillofacial units. Based on advice from a group of eight universities, research institutes and health programmes across Europe, an educational article outlines the essential symptomology, associated risks and best practices for follow-up for GDPs who have previously lacked official guidance for after-care in such cases. OPMDs have been defined by the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer as “any oral mucosal abnormality that is associated with a statistically increased risk of developing oral cancer”. Prevalence is estimated to vary widely in different parts of the world; however, the overall incidence of OPMDs is about 4.47% globally. As the COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered the capabilities of GDPs, the Royal College of Surgeons of England introduced guidance specific to triaging and patient management for the altered circumstances, which assisted GDPs who were under added pressure to identify OPMDs while working with fewer resources. However, once their patients have been successfully diagnosed, treated and released from a specialist unit, there is generally a lack of guidance available for those same GDPs for ongoing case management. New oral cancer saliva test could reduce false-positive results

As new oral cancer diagnoses rose to more than 41,000 in 2013, the demand for early detection continues to increase. Yi-Shing Lisa Cheng, DDS, PhD, an associate professor in diagnostic sciences at Baylor College, has been working to develop a saliva test as an oral cancer screening tool, according to an A&M announcement. In 2009, she received a $381,000 R21 grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to find reliable oral cancer salivary biomarkers, which can be used as indicators of disease or other health conditions. Dr. Cheng recently received a $50,000 faculty bridge grant from Texas A&M Health Science Center and A&M Baylor College of Dentistry's diagnostic sciences department to continue this research. The goal is to determine whether patients with oral lichen planus and periodontal disease exhibit false positives for the future oral cancer saliva tests. Dr. Cheng noted that early detection of cancer is always good and using a saliva test is a noninvasive and relatively easy procedure. Her research differs from models that compare salivary biomarkers of oral cancer patients with those of completely healthy individuals. Imagine being able to treat bacterial and fungal infections in the oral cavity, even periodontal disease, using this same approach. That is the promise of photodynamic therapy (PDT), a minimally invasive technique that first came into medicine in the early 1900s and has been used to treat a plethora of medical conditions, including skin diseases, localized infections, age-related macular degeneration, and premalignant and malignant disorders. "PDT in the oral cavity would utilize a photosensitizing compound and a light source to activate the compound," explained Thomas Mang, PhD, research director in the Laser and Lightwave Research Center at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. "Traditionally, it has been used in head and neck lesions and oral lesions with a photosensitizer given intravenously.
